Tartuffe (Dover Thrift Editions

Moliere’s Tartuffe is widely lauded as a brilliant and timeless masterpiece, celebrated for its incisive and devastating satire of religious hypocrisy. Reviewers consistently praise the play's exceptional wit, sarcasm, and clever dialogues, which bring to life the serious theme of feigned piety with hilarious results. The characters are frequently described as remarkable, alive, and believable, with particular appreciation for the outspoken maid Dorine and the voice of reason, Cleante. Many found the plot well-written and the comic timing perfect. Richard Wilbur’s English translation receives special commendation for its dazzling quality, capturing the play's essence and maintaining the rhyming verse, making it a joy to read and almost akin to watching a performance. Its enduring relevance, even centuries after its initial performance, is a recurring positive theme.

However, the play is not without its criticisms. The most common point of contention is the ending, which many reviewers describe as a "deus ex machina" solution that feels less credible, illogical, or somewhat grafted onto the story, even if understandable for a comedy. Some readers also noted that while the play reads well, it is ultimately better appreciated when seen on stage, suggesting that the written form might not fully convey its theatrical impact. One reviewer found the classical French vocabulary and rhyming dialogues potentially challenging, preferring to watch plays rather than read them. Furthermore, the historical context of the play being banned multiple times and causing significant outrage among its contemporary audience is frequently mentioned, highlighting the controversy Moliere faced for his bold social commentary. A few readers also felt it was not as strong as some of Moliere’s other works.

Despite these points of criticism, Tartuffe is overwhelmingly considered an excellent comedy and a significant work in world theatre. Its sharp social commentary, memorable characters, and witty dialogue secure its place as a classic that remains strikingly relevant today. This play is highly recommended for readers who enjoy incisive satire and high comedy, those interested in classic French theatre, or anyone who appreciates stories that expose hypocrisy and explore how individuals can disguise their true intentions. It particularly appeals to fans of playwrights known for their comedic and satirical prowess, offering an engaging and thought-provoking experience.
