Tehanu (4) (Earthsea Cycle)

Many readers hail Tehanu as a profound and masterful work, with some considering it superior to the earlier books in the series. It is widely praised for its exceptional character development, offering a deeper and more natural insight into beloved figures. Reviewers highlight its sophisticated exploration of themes such as trauma, gender, power, and identity, describing it as a quietly transformative and meditatively powerful reflection on fundamental human questions. The book is lauded for its eloquent, sensitive, and honest prose, which, despite a more pastoral setting and reduced focus on magic, conveys a powerful depth of content. Its unique approach, centering on richly drawn female characters and the experiences of the marginalized, is seen as a remarkable and courageous departure from traditional fantasy, challenging genre norms and offering a fresh perspective on the Earthsea world.

Conversely, Tehanu is a polarizing read for some, who find its departure from the earlier books jarring and disappointing. Criticisms often revolve around its plot, which some describe as boring, predictable, or rambling, lacking the narrative drive of its predecessors. The shift in thematic focus, particularly the extensive philosophical discussions on gender and power, felt out of place or even "sexist" to a segment of readers, who perceived an overt "political or social agenda." A significant point of contention is the portrayal of male characters, with some reviewers feeling they are depicted as weak or obnoxious, and that the book makes "unpleasant and misandrinist remarks." This, along with the intense focus on darker themes like violence and trauma, led some to label it as "too weird" or an "inferior" continuation that "ruined" the series for them.

Ultimately, Tehanu stands as a deeply divisive but undeniably significant installment in the Earthsea Cycle. It is a book best suited for readers who appreciate a character-driven narrative that prioritizes introspection and philosophical depth over epic adventure and traditional fantasy tropes. Those open to exploring complex themes of humanity, identity, and societal power dynamics, particularly through a mature, feminist lens, will likely find it a resonant and thought-provoking experience. However, readers expecting a direct continuation of high-stakes magical quests or who prefer a more conventional fantasy structure may find its subdued pacing and thematic intensity challenging. It appeals to an adult audience capable of engaging with its profound questions and unconventional storytelling.
