The book is widely praised for Michael Chabon's undeniable talent, with many reviewers describing his prose as brilliant, gifted, and a dazzling display of verbal virtuosity. Readers frequently highlight the engaging, vivid, and often humorous language that makes paragraphs worth re-reading. The novel is lauded for its rich tapestry of quirky, well-developed characters who feel authentic and relatable, navigating complex relationships, friendships, and family dynamics within a strong sense of community. Reviewers appreciate how the book subtly explores significant themes such as race, gentrification, the clash between corporate and small businesses, and the challenges of fatherhood, all woven into a heartfelt and life-affirming narrative. Its deep immersion in pop culture references, particularly music and film, is seen by many as a fun and integral part of the book's charm, contributing to its strong sense of time and place, specifically the Oakland/Berkeley area.

However, a significant number of readers found the author's ambitious prose to be a major hurdle. Criticisms frequently cite the writing as overwritten, overly embellished, and self-indulgent, with an abundance of metaphors and complex sentence structures that make it a challenging, even laborious, read. Some reviewers felt the extensive cultural references and encyclopedic details served more to showcase the author's intelligence than to advance the story or develop characters, leading to a sense of pretentiousness. The plot is often described as meandering and lacking the depth or focus found in Chabon's other works, with some arguing it could have been considerably shorter. Concerns were also raised about the authenticity of the novel's depiction of the East Bay Area and its Black characters, with some finding the portrayals stereotypical, superficial, or misinformed, particularly regarding race and class dynamics.

Ultimately, this book generates a highly polarized reception, with its distinctive style either mesmerizing or alienating readers. It is a work that demands patience and active engagement, offering a kaleidoscopic view of a community grappling with change. This novel is highly recommended for readers who relish dense, complex, and experimental literary prose, appreciate intricate character studies, and enjoy a rich immersion in pop culture and a strong sense of place. Those who prefer straightforward narratives, are easily deterred by challenging sentence structures, or seek a less ambiguous treatment of social issues, particularly concerning cultural representation, may find it a difficult or unsatisfying experience.
