Territoires

Reviews for this book consistently highlight its unique and engaging qualities, particularly praising its distinctive narrative style. Many readers found the present tense, active narrator, and "bird's-eye view" perspective to be a fresh and immersive experience, creating a cinematic or meta-fictional feel. The book is lauded for its strong character development, featuring a compelling adult protagonist and a cast of memorable supporting figures, alongside a truly terrifying antagonist. Reviewers frequently commend the intense horror elements, suspenseful atmosphere, and rich world-building, noting an effective blend of mystery, thriller, and dark fantasy. Its significant and satisfying connections to a larger literary universe, particularly another major series by one of the authors, were a major draw, with many feeling it deepened their appreciation for the overarching mythology.

However, the book also drew criticism for several aspects. A common point of contention was its pacing, with some finding the initial sections slow, wordy, or drawn-out, leading to an inconsistent reading experience or a sense of excessive length. While many praised the narrative style, others found it distracting, describing it as feeling like a screenplay or pulling them out of the story. Some readers felt the adult protagonist, while complex, was at times too perfect or not sufficiently central to the plot. Concerns were also raised about the plot structure, with some wishing for more direct adventure or earlier entry into its fantastical elements. Additionally, the book contains extreme violence, gore, and child endangerment, which some reviewers noted as potential deal-breakers for sensitive readers.

Overall, this book is widely regarded as a compelling and darker sequel that deepens the established world, often surpassing its predecessor in intensity for many. It is particularly recommended for dedicated fans of the collaborating authors, especially those who are familiar with their interconnected literary universes and enjoy a blend of mature horror, mystery, and dark fantasy. Readers seeking a straightforward adventure or those new to the authors' works might find its unique narrative style, graphic content, and intricate ties to other series less accessible.
