The Alice in Wonderland Omnibus Including Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass (with the Original John Tenniel Illustrations)

A warm summer afternoon found a young girl named Alice drowsily nestled beside her sister on a riverbank, her mind wandering from the dull book her sister read, a book utterly devoid of pictures or conversation. Suddenly, a most peculiar sight startled her: a White Rabbit, dressed in a waistcoat and carrying a pocket watch, scurried past, muttering about being dreadfully late. Curiosity, a powerful force, compelled Alice to follow him as he vanished down a large rabbit hole. Her descent was long and slow, like falling into a deep well, until she landed softly in a long, low hall lined with many locked doors.

After much searching, a tiny golden key was discovered on a nearby table, fitting a minuscule door through which Alice glimpsed a magnificent garden. To pass through, she needed to shrink, and so she did, by drinking from a bottle labeled "DRINK ME." But alas, she had forgotten the key, now out of reach. Frustration led to tears, and a growing cake labeled "EAT ME" caused her to swell to an enormous size, her head nearly touching the ceiling. Her copious tears formed a vast pool, and as she wept, she began to shrink once more, tumbling into her own salty sea. Here, amidst the watery expanse, she encountered a Mouse, who, along with a Dodo, a Lory, an Eaglet, and a Duck, found themselves caught in the same predicament. To dry off, they engaged in a peculiar "Caucus-Race," running in circles with no clear winner.

Her adventures continued to unfold in a bewildering fashion. The White Rabbit reappeared, mistaking Alice for his maid, Mary Ann, and sent her to fetch his gloves and fan. Inside his house, another mysterious bottle caused her to grow so large she became stuck, her arm protruding from a window. The Rabbit and his neighbors, including a small lizard named Bill, attempted to dislodge her by throwing pebbles that transformed into small cakes upon landing. Eating one, Alice shrank again, fleeing into a wood where she soon met a large, hookah-smoking Caterpillar perched atop a mushroom. He posed the existential question, "Who are *you*?" a query that deeply troubled Alice as her identity seemed to shift with every change in size. The Caterpillar, with his cryptic wisdom, instructed her on how to control her height by eating from the mushroom's different sides.

With newfound control over her size, Alice journeyed onward, encountering the perpetually grinning Cheshire Cat, whose head could appear and disappear at will, leaving only its smile behind. The Cat directed her to the home of the Duchess, where she found a chaotic kitchen filled with pepper, a perpetually sneezing cook, and a baby that soon transformed into a piglet in Alice's arms. The Cheshire Cat, ever-present and philosophical, reappeared to guide her towards the Mad Hatter.

Soon, Alice stumbled upon a most nonsensical tea party, where the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and a sleepy Dormouse were forever stuck at tea-time, having quarreled with Time itself. Riddles without answers, fragmented conversations, and the constant shifting of places around the table characterized this bizarre gathering. Alice, seeking logic in a world that defied it, found only more confusion and rudeness from her hosts.

Leaving the tea party, Alice entered a beautiful garden, only to discover three card gardeners painting white roses red. This peculiar task was a desperate attempt to hide their mistake from the formidable Queen of Hearts, a tyrannical ruler with an insatiable desire to declare "Off with their heads!" at the slightest provocation. Alice soon found herself embroiled in a chaotic game of croquet, where flamingos served as mallets, hedgehogs as balls, and card soldiers bent themselves into arches. The Queen's rage flared frequently, yet miraculously, few of her death sentences were ever carried out.

Amidst the Queen's volatile court, Alice was introduced to a Gryphon, who in turn led her to the melancholic Mock Turtle. They recounted their strange schooling and danced the whimsical Lobster Quadrille, their tales filled with delightful absurdity. The Gryphon then whisked Alice away to a most peculiar trial: the Knave of Hearts stood accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. The King of Hearts presided, a bumbling judge, while the jury comprised many of the creatures Alice had met.

As the trial descended into utter chaos and illogic, Alice began to grow rapidly, her confidence swelling with her size. She openly challenged the ridiculous proceedings, calling the witnesses and evidence absurd. When the Queen, furious at Alice's defiance, shrieked her familiar command, "Off with her head!", Alice, now a giant, declared them nothing but a pack of cards. With a sudden, forceful sweep, she scattered the entire deck.

The fantastical world shattered, and Alice awoke with a start, finding herself back on the riverbank, her head resting on her sister's lap. The dream faded, leaving only a vivid impression of the curious adventures. She recounted her extraordinary journey to her sister, who, after Alice had gone for tea, sat pondering the whimsical tale, imagining the strange creatures and the nonsensical world that Alice had briefly inhabited.
