Twelve-year-old Artemis Fowl has already spent a fortune hunting a fortune. Heir to a criminal empire left in ruins after his father vanished, he has decoded fairy lore, found the People hiding underground with high-tech weapons and magic, and laid a trap with his bodyguard Butler at Fowl Manor. His hostage is Captain Holly Short, an elven officer of the LEPrecon, taken for a ransom of fairy gold. Artemis believes every move is calculated and every rule is his to break. But the fairies do not bargain like humans, and their siege is closing in. Now the greatest criminal mind faces an enemy he cannot outthink so easily.
