Reviewers largely praise the book for its original and engaging narrative, highlighting John Grisham's characteristic writing style as essential, concrete, and clear, building suspense effectively without unnecessary fanfare. Many found the story to be a fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat thriller packed with twists and turns that keep readers hooked from the very first page. The intricate planning and strategizing within the plot were frequently commended as brilliant and impressive, creating a compelling read that explores the fantasy of escaping one's problems and executing a masterful scheme. The book's ability to make readers root for a morally ambiguous protagonist, coupled with its insightful portrayal of the judicial world, contributed to a highly entertaining and addictive experience for many.

Despite the widespread enjoyment, the book's ending emerged as a significant point of contention among reviewers. Numerous readers felt the conclusion was disappointing, unfoundational, or even a "cheap shot," leading to feelings of annoyance or confusion. Some described it as rushed, tacked-on, or leaving too many unanswered questions, preventing what could have been a truly great reading experience. Additionally, a few critics found the protagonist to be unlikable or lacking in development, while others felt certain sections dragged, featuring extended dialogue and legal procedures rather than sustained suspense. There were also comments that the book did not live up to the action or intricate plotting of Grisham's other well-known works, with some finding the overall premise difficult to fully accept.

Overall, this book stands as a compelling legal thriller that showcases Grisham's talent for crafting intricate plots and maintaining high suspense throughout much of the narrative. While its fast pace, clever strategizing, and complex character dynamics are widely celebrated, potential readers should be aware that the conclusion is polarizing and may not offer the satisfying resolution many expect from the genre. It is highly recommended for fans of Grisham's earlier works, particularly those who enjoy detailed legal maneuvers, a battle of wits against the system, and stories that delve into the psychology of a protagonist attempting to outsmart multiple antagonists. Readers who appreciate unpredictability and are open to a thought-provoking, albeit potentially frustrating, ending will likely find this an engaging read.
