The broker

Many reviewers praised this book for its engaging international political intrigue and the captivating cat-and-mouse game at its core. Readers were drawn into the protagonist's complex situation, constantly questioning the motives of various powerful entities and rooting for his survival against formidable odds. The author's detailed descriptions of an Italian city and its culture were frequently highlighted as a major strength, creating a rich, immersive setting that some found delightful and informative. For many, the character development was a strong point, presenting a flawed yet ultimately likable anti-hero whose journey held their interest. Some also appreciated the author's ability to blend suspense with elements of a cultural travelogue, finding the combination unique and successful.

Despite its strengths, a significant number of readers found the book's pacing to be slow and uneven, particularly in its initial chapters. A common criticism centered on what many perceived as excessive "filler" dedicated to the protagonist's immersion in Italian language and customs. While some enjoyed this aspect, others felt it detracted from the thriller narrative, slowing the plot without contributing substantially to the resolution or suspense. Fans of the author's more traditional legal thrillers sometimes expressed disappointment with this deviation into an espionage genre, feeling it lacked the expected intensity. Additionally, some reviewers found certain plot points to be implausible or the ending less conclusive than desired.

Overall, this book received a mixed reception, proving to be a polarizing read for many. It is recommended for readers who appreciate international political intrigue and are open to a suspense novel that heavily incorporates cultural immersion and detailed setting descriptions, almost functioning as a travelogue. Existing fans of the author who are looking for a departure from his typical legal dramas might find it an interesting, albeit different, experience. However, those seeking a relentlessly fast-paced, pure espionage thriller or a quintessential example of the author's legal genre may find themselves less engaged, and it is generally not suggested as an introductory title for new readers of the author.
