The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream The Hunt for a Victorian Era Serial Killer

In an era of gaslit streets and burgeoning scientific discovery, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream, a medical practitioner, embarked on an international spree of poisonings that spanned fifteen years across the United States, Canada, and Britain. Largely forgotten today, Cream was a serial killer who operated with a chilling audacity, preying on vulnerable women who often sought his medical assistance. His weapon of choice was poison, a method that exposed the blind trust placed in doctors during the Victorian era and highlighted the primitive state of forensic science and police investigation at the time.

This true crime account reconstructs Cream's life and his deadly trajectory, culminating in his 1892 London murder trial. It delves into the societal attitudes, flawed detection methods, and official oversights that allowed a man of science to commit a series of murders with almost no precedent, at a time when the very concept of a serial killer was unknown. The narrative transports readers into a world where a cunning killer could evade justice across continents, forcing investigators to grapple with a new breed of criminal.
