As Inspector Hardcastle grapples with this baffling scene, a young intelligence agent named Colin Lamb, on a separate Cold War investigation, becomes entangled in the mystery. He turns to his father's old friend, Hercule Poirot, who, challenged to solve the crime using only his intellect and without visiting the scene, delves into the perplexing details of the case from his armchair. This intricate puzzle of mismatched times and an unidentified corpse will test Poirot's "little grey cells" as he seeks to uncover the truth behind the clocks.

Colin, an agent with British Intelligence, finds himself drawn into the bizarre murder. He is, in fact, in the area on his own intricate mission, following a cryptic clue left by a dead agent: "letter M, number 61, and a sketch of a crescent moon." The police, led by Inspector Hardcastle, soon arrive at 19 Wilbraham Crescent, the home of the blind Miss Millicent Pebmarsh. Miss Pebmarsh, however, denies ever having summoned a typist, nor does she recognize the deceased or claim ownership of the peculiar collection of clocks. The victim carries no identification, and all labels have been meticulously removed from his clothing, rendering his identity a baffling enigma.
As the investigation unfolds, the strange details multiply. A small boy finds a Czech coin in the garden of the house. Sheila's aunt, Mrs. Lawton, reveals that Sheila's full name is Rosemary Sheila Webb, a detail that seems to resonate with an inscription found on one of the clocks. It becomes clear that Sheila is not an orphan, but the illegitimate daughter of Mrs. Lawton's sister, who had arranged for her to be raised by her aunt and then vanished from their lives. The neighborhood itself, a seemingly ordinary crescent, begins to yield a tapestry of eccentric residents and hidden connections.
Colin, finding himself increasingly entangled and intrigued by the perplexing case, turns to the one man renowned for his ability to untangle the most Gordian knots of crime: Hercule Poirot. The celebrated Belgian detective, true to his unique methods, chooses to remain in his London flat, never once visiting the crime scene or interviewing a single witness. Instead, he challenges himself to solve the elaborate puzzle through sheer intellect, relying solely on the facts relayed to him by Colin. Poirot declares that the very complexity of the crime suggests an underlying simplicity, a deliberate over-elaboration designed to obscure a straightforward truth.
The threads of the mystery, initially disparate, begin to intertwine. The seemingly random clocks, the false identity of the victim, the blind Miss Pebmarsh's denial, and even the Cold War spy plot Colin is pursuing, all become pieces in a larger, more sinister design. A second murder occurs, that of Edna Brent, another typist from Miss Martindale's agency, who had begun to piece together the inconsistencies surrounding Sheila's original summons. Later, Merlina Rival, a woman who had been coerced into falsely identifying the body, also meets a violent end.
With Poirot's keen mind at work from afar, and Colin's boots on the ground, the truth slowly emerges. The elaborate setup at Wilbraham Crescent was a meticulously planned deception, a theatrical flourish designed to draw attention away from the real crime and its true motive. The victim, it is revealed, was an old friend of a family involved in a scheme to defraud solicitors by having a second wife impersonate the first to inherit a Canadian fortune. The clocks, the false identity, and the carefully placed witnesses were all diversions to conceal the true perpetrators and their desperate, murderous acts.
Ultimately, the intricate web of deceit is untangled, revealing a plot far more calculated than the initial chaos suggested. The seemingly disparate elements - the innocent typist, the dead man, the clocks, and even the undercurrent of espionage - converge to expose a cold-blooded murder driven by greed and a desire to protect a fraudulent inheritance. The solution, once revealed, proves Poirot's assertion that even the most convoluted crimes can be broken down by the precise application of the "little grey cells," even from a comfortable armchair.

Rating Sources
The book is widely praised for its intriguing and original premise, drawing readers in with a baffling crime from the very first pages. Reviewers highlight the clever and complex plot, which expertly intertwines a murder mystery with elements of international espionage, making it difficult for readers to guess the resolution. Despite Hercule Poirot's reduced presence, many found his analytical mind to be at its best, solving the case from a distance and proving his "little grey cells" are more than capable. The narrative is often described as engaging, fast-paced, and full of red herrings, keeping readers thoroughly entertained. Colin Lamb, a key investigating character, is frequently noted as a likeable and observant protagonist who carries much of the story effectively.
However, several reviewers expressed disappointment with Hercule Poirot's limited role, noting he appears only halfway through the book and often investigates from his armchair, which some felt detached the reader from the active investigation. The resolution, while surprising to some, was frequently criticized as being underwhelming, unlikely, or not living up to the brilliant initial setup, leaving a sense of "is that all?". Concerns were also raised about certain plot conveniences, implausible coincidences, and a romantic subplot that felt forced and lacked chemistry. Some found the pacing to drag in the middle, with too many characters to track, and felt that Christie's later writing style included outdated character stereotypes or lacked the consistent genius of her earlier works.
Ultimately, "The Clocks" offers a mixed but generally entertaining experience. While it may not stand among Agatha Christie's absolute best, it is still considered a solid whodunnit that showcases her ingenious ability to craft a convoluted mystery. This book would particularly appeal to devoted Agatha Christie fans who enjoy her later works and don't mind a less prominent role for Poirot. It is also recommended for readers who appreciate complex, multi-layered plots with an espionage backdrop and enjoy the challenge of an "armchair" mystery, rather than those seeking a classic, hands-on Poirot investigation or a first introduction to the author.
