The Collectors (The Camel Club)

The Collectors is widely praised as a gripping and fast-paced thriller that keeps readers engaged from beginning to end. Many reviewers found it to be an improvement over the first book in the series, highlighting its well-developed plot and constant momentum. A significant positive is the introduction of a new character, Annabelle Conroy, who is described as a fantastic, intelligent, and independent addition, bringing humor, intrigue, and suspense to the narrative. The novel expertly weaves together two seemingly disparate storylines, with many readers commending the author's skill in connecting them in an unexpected and compelling way. The dialogue is noted as credible and punchy, contributing to the maturity and endearment of the returning ensemble cast, whose unique skills and camaraderie are a strong draw. The book also incorporates fascinating details about topics like identity theft, casino operations, and the antiquarian book market, enriching the overall reading experience.

However, some readers pointed out several drawbacks. A common critique is the necessity for a certain degree of suspension of disbelief, with some plot elements and character actions feeling farfetched or clichéd. Certain characters were perceived as undergoing inconsistent changes from the previous book, or as being too flat, silly, or stereotypical, such as a "wimpy librarian." The villain, while engaging for some, was occasionally deemed unintelligent or a "pantomime" figure. Several reviewers expressed strong dissatisfaction with the explicit scenes, describing them as poorly written, labored, and trite. Additionally, the book's ending, which leaves a significant subplot unresolved as a cliffhanger, left some feeling unfulfilled, viewing it as an abrupt stop rather than a natural conclusion, and a clear setup for a sequel. The writing style, while generally praised for being tight, was criticized by a few for an overuse of adverbs and a lack of descriptive detail for the setting.

Overall, The Collectors is considered a thoroughly entertaining and captivating read for fans of the thriller genre. It is particularly recommended for those who enjoy intricate plots, a dynamic ensemble cast, and a blend of action, espionage, and mystery. Readers who appreciate David Baldacci's signature style, are comfortable with a fast pace, and don't mind a cliffhanger that propels them to the next installment will likely find this book highly enjoyable. It appeals to those seeking pure entertainment and a compelling narrative, even if it requires overlooking some minor issues with character consistency or plot realism.
