My heart yearned for truth, yet I struggled to conceive of a spiritual God, imagining Him always as some vast, material mass.
My journey led me from Carthage to Rome, and then to Milan, where destiny placed me under the eloquent preaching of Bishop Ambrose. His words, though initially captivating for their rhetorical skill, began to penetrate my hardened heart, subtly revealing the intellectual poverty of Manichaeism and the profound depths of Catholic doctrine. The Neoplatonist writings offered a glimpse of an immaterial God, a step away from my former errors, yet still lacking the crucial mediator, Christ. I wrestled with my pride and the chains of my habits, particularly the tenacious grip of my sexual desires, feeling a crushing division within my own will.
The climax of my struggle came in a garden in Milan. Overwhelmed by my inner turmoil, the conflict between my desire for Your truth and the allure of my worldly habits, I cast myself down beneath a fig tree, weeping bitterly. A child's voice, from a nearby house, chanted "Tolle, lege! Tolle, lege!" – "Take up and read! Take up and read!" I seized a copy of the Apostle Paul's letters, opening it to the passage: "Not in revelry and drunkenness, not in debauchery and wantonness, not in strife and jealousy; but put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and as for the flesh, take no thought for its lusts." In that instant, all my doubts vanished, and a light of certainty flooded my heart, dispelling the shadows of hesitation.
Soon after, I resigned from my teaching post, embracing a life devoted to You. Along with my son, Adeodatus, and my dear friend Alypius, I was baptized by Ambrose, a moment of profound grace and rebirth. Our return journey to Africa was marked by a moment of transcendent communion with my mother, Monica, at Ostia, where our souls soared above all earthly things, glimpsing a taste of eternal wisdom, before her blessed departure from this life.
Even after my conversion, my confessions continued, for how could I ever cease to praise Your greatness and confess my dependence upon Your grace? I turned my gaze inward, delving into the mysteries of memory, that vast inner chamber where countless images and thoughts reside, a power so profound it seems almost divine. I meditated on the nature of time itself - what is it, if not a distention of the soul, a present of things past, a present of things present, and a present of things future? How can we speak of time before creation, when time itself is a part of creation?
Finally, I sought to understand Your very act of creation, pondering the opening verses of Genesis. How did You speak the world into being, not through a voice that passes in time, but through Your eternal Word? I explored the spiritual meaning embedded within the six days of creation, seeing in it an allegory for the building of Your Church and the redemption of souls. My journey, from the depths of sin and intellectual wandering to the peace found in Your embrace, is a testament to Your boundless mercy and the restless longing You place in every human heart, a longing that finds its only true rest in You.
