Gerald, Kathleen, and Jimmy found themselves abandoned to the care of a French governess at Kathleen's boarding school for the summer holidays, a sudden outbreak of measles having disrupted their usual plans. Though the prospect seemed dull, their adventurous spirits quickly led them beyond the school grounds. One sun-drenched afternoon, while exploring the unfamiliar West Country, they stumbled upon an ancient, sprawling estate known as Yalding Towers. Deep within a rose garden maze, they discovered a girl in a beautiful gown, seemingly fast asleep. She, too, became entangled with the ring's influence, leading to romantic complications involving Lord Yalding, the true owner of the enchanted castle. The children, with their newfound magical abilities and often misguided intentions, found themselves playing a peculiar role in attempting to reunite the long-lost lovers, adding a layer of adult romance to their fantastical games.

As their summer drew to a close, the children faced the ultimate challenge of controlling the magic they had unleashed. The Ugly-Wugglies, having grown too independent, presented a significant problem, and the true nature of the ring's power, which seemed to respond to belief and imagination rather than strict rules, became clearer. Through their combined efforts, a mixture of ingenuity, courage, and a final, precise wish, they managed to set things right, returning the castle, its treasures, and its inhabitants to their proper states, though forever changed by the summer's extraordinary events. They understood that magic, while wondrous, carried its own weight of consequence and that the greatest enchantment often lay within their own spirited imaginations.
