The Fever Code

The world had ended, not with a bang, but with a searing sun flare that scorched the Earth, followed by the insidious creep of the Flare, a virus that devoured minds and turned humanity into savage Cranks. From this ruin rose WICKED, an organization convinced that their ruthless experiments were the only path to a cure. Among the children they gathered, those immune to the Flare, was a boy named Stephen, soon to be known as Thomas. He was brought into their sterile, underground facilities, a place of stark white walls and chilling purpose, his past a blur, his future a carefully orchestrated path laid out by Chancellor Ava Paige.

Thomas, even at a young age, possessed a mind WICKED deemed invaluable. He was not merely a subject, but a participant, groomed to assist in the very creation of the Maze – a sprawling, intricate labyrinth designed to test the limits of immune teenagers. He found a kindred spirit in Teresa, a girl with whom he shared a mysterious telepathic connection, a bond that felt like the only real thing in a world of deception. Together, they were at the heart of the project, their brilliance exploited to design the deadly puzzles and shifting walls, all under the guise of finding a cure.

As the Maze took shape, so too did Thomas's relationships with other "Gladers" within WICKED's walls. He met Newt, Minho, and Alby, forging friendships in the tense, controlled environment. These stolen moments of camaraderie, of shared secrets and quiet rebellion, became his anchors. He even encountered a younger boy, Charles, whom he affectionately nicknamed Chuck, and their bond grew, a tender sprout of innocence in WICKED's harsh soil. Yet, even as they worked and lived together, the ethical implications of their task gnawed at Thomas. He began to question WICKED's true intentions, sensing a deeper, darker purpose behind their scientific pursuit.

The facade of WICKED's benevolent mission began to crack, revealing the chilling cruelty beneath. Thomas witnessed the brutal punishment of Minho by a Griever after an escape attempt, a stark reminder of the organization's control. He and Teresa even stumbled into the "Crank pits" with Newt, Minho, and Alby, a horrifying encounter that solidified their distrust of WICKED. The children were forced to participate in "the Purge," a secret operation to eliminate WICKED officials suspected of having the Flare, a task that further eroded Thomas's already fragile sense of morality.

Teresa, however, remained steadfast in her loyalty to WICKED's mission, convinced that their horrific methods were justified by the desperate need for a cure. This unwavering belief created a growing rift between her and Thomas, as he secretly began to work against WICKED, desperate to protect his friends from the inevitable horrors of the Maze. The revelation that Teresa had been Deedee, the sole survivor from the brutal events of the Flare's initial outbreak, only deepened the complexity of her conviction.

The day finally arrived when the Maze was complete, a monstrous testament to their unwilling genius. Thomas, filled with dread, helped prepare the Gladers for their entry, knowing that their memories would be wiped clean, their identities stripped away. He clung to every last moment, every familiar face, as one by one, his friends were sent into the labyrinth. The heartbreak of watching them disappear, their minds soon to be blank slates, was almost unbearable.

In a final, desperate act, Thomas conspired with Teresa to enter the Maze themselves, hoping to avoid the memory wipe and save their friends. But WICKED, ever vigilant, intervened. Before Thomas could fully enact his plan, Chancellor Paige confronted him, drugging him and revealing the chilling truth: Teresa had willingly participated in the deception, convinced that WICKED's ends justified their monstrous means. As darkness consumed him, Thomas was left with the crushing weight of betrayal and the knowledge that the Maze, which he had helped build, awaited him.
