The Golden Bough Pt. Iv. Adonis, Attis, Osiris. 1922

Reviewers widely acknowledge The Golden Bough as a seminal and profoundly influential work, shaping the fields of anthropology, comparative religion, and inspiring numerous prominent writers and thinkers from Freud and Jung to T.S. Eliot and Joseph Campbell. Many praise it as an extraordinary anthology, a treasure trove brimming with an exhaustive collection of myths, rituals, and belief systems from diverse cultures across the globe. Readers often find it offers fascinating insights into the origins of human thought, magic, and religion, providing a rich panorama of human creativity and the opportunity to draw their own connections between disparate cultural practices. Even beyond its central arguments, the book is valued for preserving snippets of disappearing cultural practices and historical understanding, proving an intriguing and often captivating read for those interested in ancient lore and traditions.

Despite its enduring impact, the book frequently draws criticism for its considerable length and often repetitive nature, with many readers finding the sheer volume of examples tedious and challenging to navigate without skimming. A common point of contention is that many of Frazer's original theories and anthropological methodologies are now considered outdated or broadly discredited by modern scholarship, particularly his linear model of cultural evolution from magic to religion and then to science. Reviewers also point out issues with the author's writing style, describing it as poorly argued, lacking coherent structure, and failing to trim unnecessary details. Furthermore, the book's historical context means it contains problematic attitudes, with some critics highlighting instances of racism, imperialism, and a discriminatory tone in its characterization of various peoples.

Ultimately, The Golden Bough remains a landmark and essential text, regarded as a foundational reference in the history of anthropological thought, despite its acknowledged flaws. It is highly recommended for readers with a deep interest in folklore, mythology, ancient customs, magic, and the historical development of religious and cultural beliefs. The book appeals particularly to those who appreciate extensive detail and are willing to engage with a challenging, lengthy work, offering a unique and often mind-expanding journey into humanity's collective past. However, it may not be suitable for readers seeking concise arguments, modern academic rigor, or those easily deterred by historical perspectives on culture.
