Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling further than his pantry. His contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of thirteen dwarves arrive on his doorstep to whisk him away on an adventure. They are on a quest to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Reluctantly, Bilbo joins their quest for a share of the treasure, appointed as the party's burglar.
The journey takes Bilbo and his companions from the civilized lands of Hobbiton into the menacing wilderness. Along the way, they encounter trolls, goblins, and giant spiders, and in the depths of the Misty Mountains, Bilbo meets a creature named Gollum and acquires a magic ring. This unexpected expedition forces the home-loving hobbit to draw upon hidden reserves of cunning and courage. The story chronicles a reluctant hero's transformation and sets the stage for a larger conflict in the world of Middle-earth.
