The House on Mango Street

We are always moving, my family and I, from one cramped apartment to another, each one a temporary stop that never quite feels like home. But then we arrive at the house on Mango Street, and even though it has running water and three bathrooms, it is not the "real house" we've always dreamed of. It is small and red, with a tight front yard, and the paint is peeling. It is a house I am ashamed of, a house that makes my face burn when I have to point it out. This is where I, Esperanza Cordero, begin to truly see the world around me, a world of dusty streets and close-knit families, but also a world of unspoken burdens and whispered dreams.

Life on Mango Street unfolds in a series of fleeting moments, like scattered beads from a broken necklace. There is my little sister, Nenny, with her slippery hair, who sometimes seems to understand me without words. We make friends with Lucy and Rachel, two sisters from Texas, and together we ride bikes, exploring the neighborhood, and learn about the world through shared laughter and whispered secrets. We pass the junk store that smells like old things, and we watch the girls in high heels, feeling the first stirrings of our own blossoming womanhood.

But Mango Street is also a place where I begin to observe the lives of the women around me, and their stories etch themselves into my memory. There is Marin, who waits for a man to change her life, standing under the streetlights, her eyes scanning the horizon for something that might never come. There is Minerva, not much older than me, already married with children, her husband leaving her with bruises and poems she writes in the dark. And then there is Sally, beautiful and daring, with eyes like Egypt and hair like a black shawl, whose father beats her for being too beautiful, too tempting. She dreams of escape, of a husband who will love her and take her far away, but even that dream seems to lead to a different kind of cage.

As I grow, my own body begins to change, and with it, my understanding of the world shifts. I notice boys, their glances, the way their laughter can feel both exciting and unsettling. There are moments of innocence, like sharing a bike with Lucy and Rachel, and moments that steal a piece of that innocence away, like the man at my first job who kisses me without asking. The world of men and women on Mango Street is complex, filled with both tenderness and a harsh reality that often leaves women feeling trapped and powerless.

The shame of the house on Mango Street, and the poverty that clings to it, fuels a fierce desire within me to leave. I want a house of my own, a house with a garden and a porch, a house where I can write, where I can be myself, unbound by the expectations and limitations I see around me. I find solace in words, in the stories I begin to collect and weave together, inspired by the lives of my neighbors, by their resilience, and by their quiet sorrows.

My Aunt Lupe, who was once a swimmer and then fell ill, encourages my writing, telling me to keep writing, that it will keep me free. And Alicia, who is afraid of mice and goes to university, reminds me that I am Mango Street, and that I must not forget where I come from. The women of Mango Street, in their struggles and their strength, become a part of me, even as I yearn to forge my own path, to create a new narrative for myself.

Ultimately, I realize that leaving Mango Street is not just about physically moving away. It is about carrying the stories with me, about giving voice to those who have none, and about returning, even if only through my words, to the place that shaped me. I will leave, yes, to find my own space, my own voice, but I will not forget. I will be the one who leaves the table like a man, but I will also be the one who remembers, who writes, and who, in doing so, brings Mango Street with me, transforming its dust into something beautiful and enduring.
