The Impatient: A Novel

This novel tells the interconnected stories of three women living in the Sahel region of Cameroon, bound by tradition and forced into marriages they did not choose. Ramla is a bright seventeen-year-old with dreams of becoming a pharmacist, but her education is cut short when she is promised to a wealthy older man, becoming his second wife. Her younger half-sister, Hindou, is married off to their abusive cousin. Safira, the first wife, has long navigated the complexities of a polygamous household and now finds her world upended by the arrival of a co-wife. All three are advised to practice "munyal," a Fulani word for the patience and submission expected of them.

Through these distinct yet intertwined voices, the narrative exposes the realities of domestic violence, marital rape, and the fierce rivalries that can arise between women trapped in a patriarchal system. It is a direct and unflinching look at the consequences when a woman's life is dictated by others and her only perceived virtue is her capacity to endure suffering. The book questions the cost of this forced patience and explores whether these women can find a way to reclaim their lives and their voices.
