Edward Fosca is a murderer. At least, group therapist Mariana Andros is certain of it. Fosca, a handsome and charismatic Greek Tragedy professor at Cambridge University, is adored by staff and students alike. He is particularly revered by the members of a secret society of female students known as The Maidens. But when one of The Maidens, a friend of Mariana's niece, is found brutally murdered, Mariana's conviction solidifies. She finds herself drawn back to her alma mater, a place of idyllic beauty and ancient traditions, convinced that something sinister lies beneath the surface.
Despite Fosca's solid alibi, Mariana's suspicion evolves into a fixation that drives her to investigate the killing herself. As she delves deeper into the professor's world and his selective group of students, their shared obsession with Greek myths of tragedy and death seems to bleed into the present. When another body is found, Mariana's relentless pursuit of the truth begins to threaten her credibility and her closest relationships. She must decide how far she is willing to go to stop a killer, even if it costs her everything.

471K ratings across the web 6 in 10 readers loved it, 1 didn't like it
Readers praise this book for its compelling and atmospheric setting, particularly the vivid descriptions of Cambridge University and its dark academia vibes, which effectively build a sense of foreboding and tension. Many found the narrative to be compulsively readable, driven by short chapters and a fast pace that keeps the reader engaged. The integration of Greek mythology, literature, and art references was appreciated by those who enjoy a more intellectual layer to their thrillers. Some reviewers found the protagonist, Mariana, to possess depth, even if not always traditionally likable, and enjoyed following her determined pursuit of the truth. For many, the book delivered an entertaining and memorable experience, proving to be a good escape or a way to break a reading slump.
However, a significant number of readers expressed disappointment, often comparing it unfavorably to the author's previous work, "The Silent Patient." Common criticisms include characters being unbelievable, one-dimensional, or poorly developed, with Mariana often described as irrational or failing to act like a trained psychotherapist. Concerns were raised about the portrayal of psychology, including questionable ethical practices by the protagonist and potentially problematic perpetuations of myths within the field. The dialogue was frequently cited as contrived and melodramatic, and the plot was sometimes perceived as underdeveloped or riddled with holes, relying on obvious red herrings. Many found the pacing slow in the beginning and felt the author shoehorned in personal knowledge without enhancing the narrative. The ending, in particular, was a point of contention for many, described as confusing, illogical, or ultimately unsatisfying.
Overall, opinions on this book are notably divided. While some found it to be an engaging and atmospheric thriller with intriguing literary elements, others felt it fell short of expectations due to issues with characterization, plot execution, and a disappointing conclusion. Readers who enjoy dark academia settings, stories interwoven with Greek mythology, and don't mind suspending disbelief for a fast-paced mystery might find this book enjoyable. However, those expecting a similar experience or a jaw-dropping twist akin to "The Silent Patient," or who prefer highly realistic character behavior and police procedures, may wish to temper their expectations.
