The Man in Lower Ten (Barnes & Noble Library of Essential Reading)

Reviewers praise The Man in Lower Ten as an engaging and often humorous early mystery, particularly appealing for its classic closed-door setup on a moving train. The early 1900s setting is a significant draw, offering a fascinating glimpse into a transitional period of American life, complete with details on train travel and societal norms. Many found the plot delightfully puzzling, with unexpected twists, turns, and red herrings that kept them guessing until the end. The author's readable style and trademark wit are frequently highlighted, providing a constant stream of humor that prevents the story from becoming too dark despite its serious themes. The protagonist, attorney Lawrence Blakely, is generally well-regarded for his noble heart, and his charming dynamic with his law partner and other quirky supporting characters adds to the book's entertainment value.

However, some reviewers found the plot to be overly convoluted or busy, with numerous characters and frequent shifts in location making it challenging to follow all the clues. The ultimate resolution of the mystery was occasionally described as anticlimactic or disappointing, with the journey proving more enjoyable than the destination. Criticism was also directed at the protagonist, Lawrence Blakely, who is sometimes perceived as annoying, blinded by an instant attraction, or overly sentimental in his romantic pursuits. A recurring point of contention is the book's reflection of early 20th-century sensibilities, including the use of outdated and offensive racial terms, as well as instances of casual sexism, which can be off-putting for modern readers. Some also noted that as a debut novel, it lacks the polish of the author's later, more acclaimed works.

Despite its noted flaws, The Man in Lower Ten is largely considered a fun and entertaining read, serving as a decent introduction to Mary Roberts Rinehart, often referred to as "the American Agatha Christie." It is recommended for enthusiasts of classic, old-fashioned mysteries, especially those set in the Golden Age or featuring a train setting. Readers interested in historical fiction and period pieces, who appreciate a blend of wit and intrigue, would likely enjoy this book. It particularly appeals to those willing to engage with a story that provides an authentic look into the social norms and language of over a century ago, understanding it as a historical artifact that shaped the mystery genre.
