The Mousetrap

The wind howled its mournful song around Monkswell Manor, a newly opened guesthouse nestled deep in the snow-laden English countryside. Inside, Mollie and Giles Ralston, the young proprietors, fussed over last-minute preparations, their nervous excitement palpable as they awaited their first guests. The wireless crackled with news of a brutal murder in London, a woman named Maureen Lyon strangled, the police searching for a man in a dark overcoat. A chill, unrelated to the encroaching blizzard, seemed to settle over the cozy hall.

One by one, the guests arrived, each a distinct and curious figure. First, Christopher Wren, a peculiar and rather excitable young man with a passion for architecture, whose flighty demeanor immediately set Giles on edge. Then, the perpetually discontented Mrs. Boyle, an older woman who found fault with everything from the weather to the lack of amenities. Major Metcalf, a retired military man, amiable but reserved, followed, and finally, the enigmatic Miss Casewell, a mannish woman with an unsettling, aloof air, whose cryptic remarks hinted at a troubled past. Just as the snow began to truly fall, an unexpected arrival: Mr. Paravicini, a foreign gentleman whose car had supposedly overturned in a snowdrift. His theatrical entrance and unsettling pronouncements about the house being cut off from the world only deepened the growing unease.

The blizzard soon isolated Monkswell Manor entirely, a thick blanket of white severing it from civilization. The following afternoon, a phone call from the Berkshire Police shattered any remaining semblance of peace: a sergeant was on his way. Soon, Detective Sergeant Trotter arrived on skis, a young, earnest figure who brought with him the chilling news that the London murder was connected to Monkswell Manor. The victim, Maureen Lyon, was one of two foster parents who had cruelly abused three children at Longridge Farm, one of whom, a young boy named Jimmy Corrigan, had died. The police believed one of the surviving Corrigan children, now grown, was seeking revenge, and a notebook found at the crime scene listed two addresses: Culver Street and Monkswell Manor.

Trotter's investigation began, each guest questioned, their histories probed. A sense of suspicion permeated the air, turning polite conversation into wary exchanges. During his inquiries, Mrs. Boyle, ever critical, was confronted by Major Metcalf, who recognized her as one of the magistrates who had sent the Corrigan children to Longridge Farm. She admitted her role but vehemently denied any responsibility for the tragic outcome. As Trotter continued his search of the house, the telephone line went dead, deliberately cut.

Alone in the sitting room, Mrs. Boyle heard a chilling tune being whistled – "Three Blind Mice." The lights flickered and died, plunging the room into darkness. A scuffle, a gasp, and then silence. When Mollie returned and switched the lights back on, Mrs. Boyle lay dead, strangled. Fear tightened its grip on the remaining occupants. Trotter gathered everyone, interrogating them about their whereabouts, but no one had a solid alibi. He warned them that the murderer had already claimed a second victim and that, according to the notes left by the killer, there was still one more "mouse" to go.

The detective, convinced the killer was among them, devised a plan to trap the murderer. He had everyone re-enact their movements from the time of Mrs. Boyle's murder, assigning each person a different role. Alone with Mollie in the hall, Trotter dramatically revealed his true identity: he was Georgie Corrigan, the eldest of the abused children. He blamed Mollie, his former schoolteacher, for not intervening when his younger brother, Jimmy, had sent her a desperate letter begging for help. Consumed by grief and a burning desire for retribution, he raised a gun to Mollie, intending to make her his final victim.

Just as the fatal shot was about to be fired, Miss Casewell intervened, revealing herself to be Kathy Corrigan, Georgie's sister. She gently disarmed her brother, leading him away. It was then that Major Metcalf revealed his own secret: he was not a retired major, but a detective, sent to protect the potential victims. Mollie and Giles, their own minor deceptions about anniversary gifts laid bare, reconciled, the ordeal having stripped away their superficial worries. The true identities unmasked, the tragic cycle of revenge brought to a halt, the snow-bound manor slowly began to shed its shroud of terror.
