This book garnered praise for its engaging mystery and the thrilling sensation it provides as readers delve deep into the plot, eagerly seeking answers. Many found the story enjoyable and entertaining, with some even considering it an all-time favorite by the author. The plot was described as addictive, offering an entertaining challenge to guess the culprit until the very end. While Miss Marple's appearance is later in the book, her characteristic charm and intelligence were highlighted as a positive. Some appreciated that the full-length format allowed for a thorough introduction to the characters, making for a compelling read that was also noted for being less convoluted than some other works by the author.

However, several readers expressed confusion, particularly regarding the characters, finding it difficult to keep track of who was who. A common sentiment was a desire for a more prominent role for Miss Marple, with the primary narrator sometimes described as less charismatic in comparison. A specific point of criticism was directed at a romantic subplot, which some felt was forced or unconvincing, leading to confusion about character dynamics. One review also suggested that an abridged version might contribute to a less satisfying experience.

Overall, despite some areas of confusion and specific criticisms regarding character dynamics and the romance, many readers found the book to be a compelling and entertaining mystery. It is recommended for fans of the author who enjoy an addictive plot with unexpected twists and the challenge of trying to solve the crime alongside the characters. Readers who appreciate a strong mystery narrative, even if it features a less central role for Miss Marple or a potentially confusing cast of characters, would likely enjoy this book, especially as a quick and fun read.
