The Murders in the Rue Morgue

Many reviewers celebrate this book as a foundational work, widely acknowledged as the first modern detective story. It is praised for introducing the prototype of the eccentric, brilliant detective, C. Auguste Dupin, frequently cited as the inspiration for later iconic characters like Sherlock Holmes, along with the classic sidekick narrator. Readers found the core mystery compelling and the pacing generally quick and engaging for a short story. The narrative is noted for pioneering key elements of the detective genre, such as baffling locked-room mysteries and the detailed exploration of deductive reasoning. Despite its age, some found the story surprisingly intense or entertaining, appreciating its historical significance and Poe's distinctive gothic writing style.

However, the book also drew criticism for several aspects. A common point of contention was the eventual resolution, which many reviewers found arbitrary, preposterous, or simply not amazing, leading to a sense of disappointment or confusion. Some felt there was insufficient foreshadowing or clues for the reader to deduce the outcome independently, suggesting the author "cheated" a little. Another significant criticism revolved around the writing style, with many describing it as dry, didactic, or overly expository, particularly in the initial sections. Reviewers occasionally found the detailed explanations tedious, leading to a slow pace or difficulty in staying engaged, and some even struggled to finish the book. While historically interesting, some readers felt it wasn't a mandatory read, even for ardent detective fans, and not particularly memorable.

Ultimately, this book is highly regarded for its immense historical importance as the genesis of the modern detective story, laying crucial groundwork for an entire genre. While its influence is undeniable, contemporary readers' enjoyment may vary, especially concerning its narrative style and the nature of its resolution. It is best suited for readers with an interest in the evolution of crime fiction, those who appreciate classic literature and Poe's unique intellectual approach, or anyone curious to experience the very first iteration of the detective genre. However, readers seeking a fast-paced, easily solvable mystery with modern pacing, or those who dislike extensive exposition, might find it less to their taste. Despite its varying reception, it remains a significant literary landmark.
