The Polaroid Book Selections from the Polaroid Collections of Photography

Reviewers largely praise the book as a beautiful and inspiring collection that elevates Polaroid photography to an art form. Many found the included photographs to be unique, powerful, and aesthetically pleasing, showcasing the creative potential of the medium beyond simple snapshots. The book features a wide array of images, from experimental and candid shots to artistic nudes and technical landscapes, by both renowned artists and lesser-known talents. Readers appreciated the high quality printing, gorgeous color details, and careful curation of the images. The informative introduction detailing Polaroid's history and inventors, along with an artist index and an overview of camera models, were also highlighted as valuable additions, inspiring many to explore photography further or even acquire a Polaroid camera themselves.

Despite the overall positive reception, some reviewers expressed reservations. A common criticism was the perceived inconsistency in the quality of the photographs, with several readers finding only a fraction of the images truly compelling or memorable. Many wished for more context, essays, or artist statements to accompany the photos, feeling that explanations of artistic intent or techniques would have enhanced their appreciation for certain selections. Some reviewers felt the collection could have benefited from a tighter curation, suggesting that a smaller, more impactful selection might have been preferable. Additionally, the presentation of artist names and photo details, often relegated to the back or subtly placed, was deemed impractical by some. A few reviewers also found the amount of nudity or certain sexually explicit content to be excessive or unsettling.

Overall, the book is considered a valuable and visually engaging tribute to the art and history of Polaroid photography. While some found the selection uneven or desired more textual context, its strengths in showcasing the diverse artistic possibilities of instant film and its high production quality are widely acknowledged. It is highly recommended for enthusiasts of physical photography, those interested in photographic history, and aspiring artists seeking inspiration. This book serves as an excellent coffee table volume and a compelling resource for anyone wanting to delve into the unique charm and artistic legacy of Polaroid.
