the rainbow trail

Readers largely commend the book for Zane Grey's distinctive and beautiful prose, particularly his vivid descriptions of the American West's landscapes, canyons, and natural formations. Many found his writing created a strong sense of place, making the settings feel real and cinematic. The narrative is often celebrated as an enjoyable and fascinating adventure, blending elements of romance and mystery with a compelling journey of self-discovery, faith, and the forging of strong friendships. The book is lauded for its exploration of timeless themes such as loyalty, honor, and the transformation of character through challenging experiences. Some reviewers specifically praised the development of certain supporting characters and the protagonist's personal growth, finding the story to be a thoughtful and poignant addition to the classic Western genre.

However, the book also drew criticism from several readers. A common point of contention was the pacing, with many finding it slow and the narrative sometimes bogged down by overly extensive or repetitive descriptions that overshadowed the plot. Some felt the story had too much build-up, leading to a less impactful resolution, and noted a scarcity of traditional Western action. The main protagonist, while undergoing a journey of change, was sometimes described as inconsistent, lacking deep inner turmoil, or making questionable decisions. Reviewers also expressed disappointment with the portrayal of returning characters from the previous book, finding them to be less dynamic or merely 'cardboard cutouts.' Additionally, some readers found the author's portrayal of certain cultural or religious groups to be biased or a mismatch for their expectations of a Western novel, perceiving it as melodramatic or disjointed in its style.

Overall, this book is seen as a worthy continuation of its acclaimed predecessor, offering a nuanced blend of classic Western adventure with a strong emphasis on personal introspection and vivid natural imagery. While its slower pacing and character portrayals may not appeal to all, it is likely to be cherished by readers who appreciate Zane Grey's unique literary style and his ability to immerse them in the majestic landscapes of the American frontier. It is particularly recommended for those who enjoy Westerns that prioritize romance, character development, and profound descriptions over constant action, as well as readers interested in exploring themes of faith and personal transformation within a historical setting, and those who are open to an older, more reflective style of storytelling.
