The Secret Woman

Readers who enjoyed this book often praised Victoria Holt's signature style, highlighting her ability to craft intriguing romantic suspense stories with captivating gothic atmospheres. Many found the descriptions of settings and characters to be excellent, creating a transporting experience, particularly when the narrative moved from England to exotic locales like the South Seas. Reviewers appreciated the rich family drama and the pervasive sense of secrets that kept them engaged. The book was described by some as a gripping page-turner, filled with unexpected twists and reveals, making it a satisfying read for those who enjoy the author's characteristic blend of mystery and romance without explicit content.

However, a significant number of reviewers expressed disappointment, finding the book underwhelming and tedious. Common criticisms included issues with pacing, with some feeling that crucial plot elements appeared too late in the story, making the first half feel superfluous. Many found the writing style, dialogue, and character reactions to be unconvincing for the period, and felt that only one or two characters were adequately developed. The romance itself was frequently described as lukewarm, unbelievable, or even problematic, with the hero often seen as unappealing. Several readers also noted that the book felt less like a true Gothic novel and more like a predictable romantic suspense, with the central mystery often being easy to guess and the resolution delivered in an anticlimactic manner.

Overall, 'The Secret Woman' appears to be a polarizing entry in Victoria Holt's bibliography, often considered a 'miss' even by long-time fans. While it offers the author's characteristic elements of historical intrigue, exotic settings, and a complex web of secrets, it struggles with pacing and character appeal for many readers. This book would likely best appeal to devoted Victoria Holt completists or those specifically seeking a historical romantic suspense with a strong emphasis on atmosphere and a journey to distant lands, and who are prepared for a slower build-up and a romance that some found less than ideal. Readers new to Victoria Holt's work might find it less engaging than her more highly-regarded titles.
