The Tragedy of King Richard the Second

The stage is set in England, where King Richard II, a monarch who believes his right to rule is divine, presides over a court rife with simmering discontent. His cousin, Henry Bolingbroke, Duke of Hereford, publicly accuses Thomas Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk, of treason and of plotting the murder of the King's uncle, the Duke of Gloucester. Though John of Gaunt, Bolingbroke's father and Richard's uncle, privately suspects the King's own involvement in Gloucester's death, Bolingbroke at this point does not voice such a suspicion. When attempts at reconciliation fail, Richard commands a trial by combat between the two men. Yet, as the duel is about to commence, Richard abruptly halts the proceedings, banishing both Bolingbroke for ten years (later reduced to six) and Mowbray for life.

Soon after, the revered John of Gaunt, weakened by age and the sorrow of his son's banishment, delivers a poignant lament for England, criticizing Richard's misgovernance. Upon Gaunt's death, Richard, in a move that further alienates his nobles, seizes all of Gaunt's lands and wealth to fund an ongoing war in Ireland, thereby denying Bolingbroke his rightful inheritance. This act of arbitrary power, coupled with Richard's lavish spending and leasing of royal lands, ignites widespread indignation among the English nobility. Richard then departs for Ireland, leaving his other uncle, Edmund of Langley, the Duke of York, in charge as Lord Governor.

During Richard's absence, the seeds of rebellion sown by his unjust actions begin to sprout. News arrives that Bolingbroke has returned to England with an army, ostensibly to reclaim his inheritance. The Duke of York, torn between his loyalty to the crown and his dismay at Richard's tyranny, finds himself unable to staunch the rising tide of support for Bolingbroke. As Bolingbroke's forces gather strength, executing Richard's favored courtiers Bushy and Green, the common people and many nobles flock to his banner, recognizing in him a more capable and pragmatic leader.

Richard's return from Ireland is met not with loyal troops, but with desertion and the stark reality of his crumbling authority. He finds that his Welsh forces have scattered and even his uncle York has sided with Bolingbroke. The once-proud King, confronted by the overwhelming force of Bolingbroke's rebellion, is forced to yield. He agrees to Bolingbroke's demands, which include the repeal of his banishment and the restoration of his inheritance.

The climax arrives with Richard's formal abdication of the throne. In a scene charged with sorrow and the weight of a kingdom's transition, Richard relinquishes his crown to Bolingbroke, who then announces his own coronation as King Henry IV. Stripped of his royal identity, Richard is imprisoned in Pomfret Castle.

Yet, even in his downfall, Richard remains a figure of tragic consequence. A plot to restore him to the throne is uncovered, involving the Duke of Aumerle, York's son. Though Aumerle is pardoned by the new king, the lingering threat Richard represents leads Sir Pierce Exton to believe that Richard's death would please Henry. Thus, in a grim act of political expediency, Richard is murdered in his prison cell. King Henry IV, though receiving news of his supporters' efforts against his detractors, rejects Exton's bloody deed, banishing him and vowing a pilgrimage to atone for the sin that has stained his ascent to power.
