What other readers say

Liked

This book is widely praised for its insightful exploration of how technology and interconnectedness have reshaped the global landscape. Reviewers highlight its detailed and informative nature, offering a comprehensive overview of globalization, free trade, and outsourcing in an accessible, often folksy journalistic style. Many found it an enlightening read, particularly for those seeking to understand the fundamental shifts in modern business and societal interactions. The author's ability to break down complex concepts into understandable terms, coupled with compelling arguments, makes it a valuable resource for grasping the major issues of globalization and their everyday impact.

Disliked

However, the book draws significant criticism for its excessive length and repetitive nature, with many reviewers suggesting it could have been considerably shorter. The author's tendency to coin and re-emphasize jargon, alongside frequent self-promotional anecdotes, often irritates readers. Some find the content dated, presenting observations that were already obvious to many by the time of publication. Critics also point to a perceived lack of critical analysis, arguing that the book romanticizes globalization, overemphasizes its beneficiaries, and neglects the negative consequences or the experiences of less-developed regions. The author's journalistic style, relying heavily on anecdotes rather than rigorous data, and a noticeable political bias, are additional points of contention.

In short

Despite its stylistic flaws and a tendency towards repetition, the book is generally considered an important work for its subject matter, sparking crucial conversations about the evolving global economy. It is highly recommended for readers who are new to the concepts of modern globalization, those seeking a broad overview of the forces shaping international business and technology, or individuals looking for a "wake-up call" regarding global competitiveness. While more tech-savvy or politically engaged readers might find parts of it redundant or simplistic, it serves as a valuable stepping stone for the uninitiated to understand the interconnected world.
