While generally well-received, some readers found the book's content to be less revelatory if they were already familiar with the film's production through documentaries or other media, noting that much of the information has become widely known over time. A few reviewers felt that the writing style could sometimes be dull or heavy, making it a slower read despite the inherently interesting subject matter. Others pointed out that the book focuses heavily on technical and logistical details of filmmaking, such as deal-making, location scouting, and the mechanics of special effects, rather than delving into more personal anecdotes or "juicy gossip" about the cast and crew. Additionally, some readers unfamiliar with film terminology or prominent industry figures of the era occasionally found themselves missing context.

Overall, the consensus is that this is an invaluable and highly recommended book, often described as one of the best "making-of" accounts ever written.
