Reviewers widely regard this volume as a significant step forward in the Tintin series, often hailing it as the true beginning of the iconic adventures. It is celebrated for its well-constructed plot, engaging pace, and grander scope, moving beyond simpler narratives to introduce complex international crime, drug trafficking, and secret organizations. Readers appreciate the diverse and exotic settings visited, including India and Egypt, which add a genuine interest to the experience. The book marks the debut of beloved recurring characters, such as the bumbling detectives Thomson and Thomson, whose comedic antics expertly balance the suspenseful storyline. Tintin himself is seen as evolving into the intelligent, courageous, and questioning hero readers know, relying on his wits rather than mere luck. The artwork is also highlighted as more refined and detailed, contributing to the overall appeal and immersive quality of the adventure.

Despite its strengths, some reviewers note recurring weaknesses. A common criticism points to the reliance on improbable coincidences or "miracles" that frequently rescue Tintin from perilous situations, which can undermine the narrative's realism for some readers. The humor, while present, is sometimes described as slapstick and not always sophisticated enough to appeal to adult sensibilities. Additionally, some segments of the story are perceived as "filler," not directly contributing to the main plot and leading to a disjointed reading experience. While an improvement over earlier volumes, the book still contains elements of "racist clichés" and "xenophobia," particularly in its portrayal of foreign cultures, though these are less pronounced than in previous installments. One reviewer also expressed a general disinterest in the main character.

Overall, "Cigars of the Pharaoh" is considered a pivotal and highly enjoyable entry in The Adventures of Tintin. It represents a significant maturation of Hergé's storytelling, laying the groundwork for the more intricate plots and character development that define the series. This book is particularly recommended for teenagers and young adults who appreciate international mystery, adventure, and a blend of suspense and humor. It will also appeal to long-time fans looking for a nostalgic re-read and those interested in tracing the evolution of Tintin's world. While acknowledging its historical context and some outdated elements, many readers find it a captivating and memorable read, solidifying its status as a classic.
