Fledgling vampyre Zoey Redbird is finally settling in at the House of Night. She has new friends, a handle on the vast powers granted to her by the goddess Nyx, and has even been chosen to lead the school's most elite group. For the first time, she feels like she belongs. But just as she starts to feel at home, a series of gruesome murders shatters the peace. Human teenagers are being killed, and all evidence points directly to the vampyres at the House of Night.
As danger stalks the humans from her old life, Zoey is forced to confront a terrifying possibility: the greatest threat may not be from the outside world, but from within the school's hallowed walls. The very powers that make her unique could be a danger to everyone she loves. When death strikes close to home, Zoey must find the courage to face a betrayal so deep it could break her heart and soul, forcing her to question who she can truly trust before her world is irrevocably destroyed.

What other readers say
Liked
Many readers found this sequel to be an improvement over the first book, offering a more engaging plot with unexpected twists and a deeper exploration of its unique world and mythology. The story is often described as addictive and fast-paced, with elements of action and romance that contribute to its appeal. Some found the supporting characters to be enjoyable and humorous, leading to emotional and immersive reading experiences. The book effectively builds anticipation for future installments and introduces interesting developments, including a nuanced portrayal of morality that hints at complex character dynamics.
Disliked
However, a significant number of readers expressed frustration with the book's writing quality, describing it as immature, simplistic, and excessively repetitive, particularly in its recaps of previous events. The protagonist, Zoey, was frequently criticized for being arrogant, hypocritical, and whiny, with her multiple romantic entanglements leading to problematic and often awkward scenarios, including a concerning dynamic with an older character. Critics also pointed out the overuse of derogatory language, unconvincing characterizations, and the problematic portrayal of minority characters through stereotypes. The plot was often seen as slow to develop, predictable, and overshadowed by interpersonal drama.
In short
Overall, Betrayed emerges as a polarizing read. While it offers an intriguing foundational concept, a fast-paced narrative, and an addictive quality for some, many readers found it hindered by its execution, particularly in writing and character development. Despite its flaws, the book often successfully builds anticipation for future installments, drawing readers in with its evolving world and overarching mystery. It is likely to appeal most to young adult readers who enjoy paranormal romance, especially those who appreciate vampire lore with unique twists and can overlook issues in writing style and character consistency for the sake of an engaging, if at times frustrating, story.
