Trois femmes

The book is widely praised for its immersive and compelling nature, with many reviewers describing it as a page-turner that is hard to put down. Readers found the intimate and vulnerable accounts of the three women to be absorbing, offering a raw and unflinching look into their lives and relationships. The author's unique storytelling approach, often reading like a novel despite being non-fiction, was appreciated by some for allowing the women's individual voices to shine through. Many found the book thought-provoking, sparking important discussions about the complexities of human connection and desire, and appreciated the courage of the women who shared their deeply personal experiences. Some also found moments of relatability and empathy with the characters, despite their differing circumstances.

However, a significant number of critics expressed disappointment, primarily stemming from what they perceived as misleading marketing. Many felt the book failed to deliver on its promise of being a comprehensive examination of "female desire," arguing that the stories presented were often more about trauma, exploitation, or desire controlled by men. A major point of concern was the narrow scope of the subjects, all being white, straight, and from similar backgrounds, which limited the book's ability to represent the diversity of women's experiences or draw broad conclusions. Reviewers frequently noted a lack of analytical depth, feeling the book transcribed stories without offering sufficient insight or resolution. The inclusion and portrayal of a story involving statutory rape was particularly contentious, with some finding it irresponsible for blurring the lines between abuse and desire. Additionally, some found the writing style to be overly graphic, pretentious, or depressing, making for an uncomfortable read.

Ultimately, the book elicits strongly mixed reactions, being both fascinating and frustrating for many. It is not a book for readers seeking a broad, academic, or traditionally analytical study of female desire, nor for those expecting a clear feminist manifesto or a universally empowering narrative. Instead, it is likely to appeal to readers drawn to candid, intimate, and sometimes scandalous personal stories, presented in a narrative, fiction-like style. Those who enjoy deeply personal accounts that provoke introspection and discussion about relationships, vulnerability, and the intricate nature of individual human wants, even when uncomfortable or unresolved, may find it a compelling read. However, readers sensitive to graphic details or the problematic portrayal of traumatic experiences should approach with caution.
