Reviewers widely celebrate "Good Omens" as a brilliantly hilarious and witty work of comedic fantasy. Many praise its sharp British humor, often drawing comparisons to Douglas Adams's style, and its clever ability to disguise profound philosophical and theological explorations within a madcap, apocalyptic plot. The unique collaboration between Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman is frequently highlighted for its seamless blend of distinctive writing styles, resulting in an unpredictable, charming, and deeply entertaining read. The dynamic and banter between the primary angel and demon characters is consistently cited as a major strength, providing both humor and emotional depth. Readers appreciate the inventive world-building, sharp dialogue, and the book's capacity to be both laugh-out-loud funny and thought-provoking.

Despite its widespread acclaim, the book has proven to be a significant disappointment for some readers. Common criticisms include inconsistent pacing, with the narrative sometimes feeling clunky, slow, or over-padded, particularly in the latter half. A frequent point of contention is the focus on certain secondary characters or subplots, which some reviewers found uninteresting, annoying, or felt detracted from the more engaging main storyline. A segment of readers did not connect with the humor, describing it as forced, juvenile, or simply not funny, leading some to abandon the book partway through. Others felt the collaborative effort diluted the individual brilliance of the authors, resulting in a less impactful or original work than expected, or found the plot convoluted with too many characters and subplots to track.

Overall, "Good Omens" is a polarizing but largely beloved book, with its appeal heavily dependent on individual taste for satirical British humor and fantastical takes on profound themes. Readers who enjoy witty, irreverent humor, philosophical depth cleverly woven into an imaginative plot, and the distinctive narrative voices of both Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman will likely find it an absolute delight and a memorable experience. However, those who prefer a more straightforward narrative, consistent pacing, or are easily offended by religious satire may find themselves disappointed or disengaged. It is particularly recommended for fans of Douglas Adams and those who appreciate a blend of sharp wit, social commentary, and imaginative storytelling.
