In a future where psychic abilities are weaponized for corporate espionage and the recently deceased can sustain a limited consciousness in "half-life" facilities, Joe Chip works as a technician for Runciter Associates, a firm specializing in anti-psychic countermeasures. When a routine assignment on the moon leads to a catastrophic explosion, Glen Runciter, the company's owner, appears to be critically injured and placed into cold storage. However, the surviving members of his team soon find their reality unraveling.

As their world regresses through different time periods, objects deteriorate, and the very fabric of existence seems to decay around them. Conflicting messages from the presumed-dead Runciter emerge, and his face mysteriously appears on currency. Amidst this escalating disorienting chaos, a peculiar product called Ubik is advertised, hinting at its crucial role in either causing or combating the bizarre shifts in their perception. This unraveling of reality forces a deep questioning of what is real, who is truly alive, and the nature of consciousness itself.
