Uglies

Reviewers frequently praised "Extras" for its fast-paced and engaging narrative, making it a quick read for many. The book was commended for expanding the established futuristic world by introducing new settings and characters, offering a fresh perspective on the series' themes. Many appreciated its timely exploration of concepts like fame, reputation, and social media, finding the "reputation economy" premise both creative and thought-provoking in its reflection of contemporary society. The author's ability to craft a vivid world and introduce innovative technology was also highlighted, with some readers enjoying the new protagonist and finding a particular supporting element to be memorable and humorous. For some, this installment was even seen as an improvement over the previous book in the series.

Despite its strengths, "Extras" drew significant criticism, with many reviewers finding it to be a disappointment and inferior to earlier books in the series. Common complaints included inconsistent and stilted dialogue, as well as perceived plot holes and sloppy writing, particularly regarding details like a language barrier. The new protagonist, Aya, was frequently described as whiny, self-absorbed, or lacking depth and compelling motivation, which made her difficult for some to connect with. A major point of contention was the portrayal of returning characters, especially Tally, whom many felt was inconsistently written, unlikable, or a betrayal of her established personality. Reviewers also expressed dissatisfaction with the overall philosophical critique, arguing that it often felt shallow or ended up reinforcing the very societal norms it aimed to challenge. Furthermore, the plot was sometimes deemed loose, unengaging, or leading to an anti-climactic resolution, with a specific, unconventional plot element being widely regarded as jarring, ridiculous, or unnecessary.

Ultimately, "Extras" is a polarizing addition to the series, eliciting a wide range of responses. While it offers a fast-paced adventure with creative ideas and relevant social commentary on fame and reputation, its execution drew considerable criticism for character inconsistencies, plot weaknesses, and a perceived shallow philosophical depth. The book may appeal most to readers who enjoyed the broader universe of the series and are open to a new protagonist and themes, especially those seeking a quick, action-oriented dystopian story that reflects on modern societal obsessions. However, readers deeply invested in the original characters or seeking a more consistently strong narrative and profound critique may find this installment to be a less satisfying conclusion.
