Un perfecto equilibrio

Reviewers widely praise the book as a magnificent and deeply moving experience, often describing it as unputdownable despite its length. Many found themselves staying up all night to finish it, captivated by the fast-moving narrative and the profound emotional impact that brought tears and even sobbing to their eyes. The author is lauded for his superb, beautifully crafted prose, which is noted for its sincerity and ability to create a life-like, immersive reading experience. A significant strength lies in the extraordinarily well-drawn and memorable characters, whose joys and sorrows the reader comes to share intimately. The novel is also commended for its insightful and descriptive portrayal of India during a tumultuous period, particularly the State of Emergency in the 1970s, offering a deep understanding of historical events, caste systems, and human rights issues. Themes of resilience, unexpected friendship, and the enduring human spirit amidst immense adversity are highlighted as powerful and touching.

While impactful, many reviewers found the book to be relentlessly grim, brutal, and profoundly depressing. It is frequently described as a bleak tale with little to no hope or redemption, where everything seems to go wrong and does not get better. Some felt the sheer volume of atrocities and misfortunes heaped upon the characters, especially the main protagonists, bordered on exaggeration or made them seem like puppets for the author's political agenda, diminishing their believability as real people. A minority of readers also found the writing slow or the pace unbearable, leading to difficulty in finishing the 600-plus page novel. While most praised the prose, a few noted instances of what they perceived as histrionic melodrama or even tasteless slapstick, which detracted from the tragic elements. Additionally, some coincidental meetings between characters were questioned as implausible.

Ultimately, the book leaves an indelible mark on readers, often described as a life-changing and important novel. It is frequently recommended as a masterpiece that explores the precarious balance between hope and despair, even if many feel the scales are heavily tipped towards misery. Despite its challenging and emotionally draining content, the rich characterization, compelling storytelling, and historical insight make it a worthwhile read for those prepared for its intensity. This book is particularly suited for readers interested in Indian history and culture, character-driven narratives that delve into social injustice and human resilience, and those who appreciate a powerful, unflinching exploration of life's hardships and the unexpected bonds formed in adversity. It is often suggested that readers be in the right state of mind and consider pairing it with a lighter read afterwards to soothe their spirits.
