Until Proven Safe

The book is widely praised as a well-written, original, and extensively researched exploration of quarantine. Reviewers highlight its broad scope, covering the history, present, and future of quarantine beyond just human infectious diseases. Many found it fascinating and enlightening to learn about its application in diverse contexts, such as safeguarding plants, managing invasive species, preventing extraterrestrial contamination, and even the long-term isolation of nuclear waste. The authors' years of research, including global travel and interviews, are evident, resulting in a scholarly yet accessible narrative. Readers appreciated the engaging style, with anecdotes and the authors' personal research experiences making potentially complex information immediate and alive, often comparing it to a compelling podcast. The book is commended for its nuanced approach and for largely steering clear of political commentary, focusing instead on the historical and scientific aspects of its subject.

Despite its strengths, some readers found the book's broad scope occasionally led to a dilution of its core arguments or felt that certain sections were less engaging. A few reviewers noted that parts of the book, such as a chapter on disinfecting mail, could be dull or that the inclusion of topics like nuclear waste felt tangential to the main theme of quarantine. There were also comments that the discussion on digital surveillance and future quarantine technologies lacked depth or sufficient real-world reporting. Some wished for more detailed analysis on specific societal issues, such as public trust in institutions or governmental responsibility during periods of restricted movement. A minor point of contention for one reviewer was a historical inaccuracy regarding Australian unification, while another felt the historical sections occasionally relied on outdated academic literature. Additionally, some readers found the information in the book less engaging than the authors' podcast, and a few felt the book's timeliness during the recent pandemic might limit its long-term appeal for those experiencing "quarantine fatigue."

Overall, the book is largely recommended as a comprehensive and thought-provoking deep dive into the concept of quarantine. While acknowledging its occasional diversions and varying levels of engagement for different readers, most reviewers found it to be a valuable and timely resource. It is particularly recommended for those with a strong interest in the history of medicine, science, engineering, or popular science. Readers who appreciate wide-ranging narrative nonfiction that explores complex topics through historical context and diverse applications will likely find this book rewarding. However, some suggest that those experiencing "quarantine fatigue" from recent events might consider reading it at a later date, or that only those "deeply interested" in the topic would fully appreciate it. Ultimately, the book offers a smart, nuanced perspective on a subject that is as much about human behavior and societal challenges as it is about disease control.
