Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Dolye(Illustrated Edition)

This book is widely considered a solid and engaging entry in the Sherlock Holmes canon, with many readers finding it to be a decent and classic Holmes story. The first part, featuring Holmes and Watson's investigation, is frequently praised for its brilliant execution, intriguing mystery, and the detective’s keen intellect and deduction skills, often accompanied by his characteristic wit. Reviewers appreciate Arthur Conan Doyle's storytelling, noting the beautiful writing, good prose, and the way the narrative builds suspense. Some found the second part, which delves into a historical backstory, to be compelling and exciting as it unfolds, offering interesting twists and a "top plot twist" that surprised many. The novel is also recognized for its exploration of themes like morality and ethical ambiguity, and its critique of secret societies.

However, a significant point of contention for many readers is the book's two-part structure, where the latter half shifts away from Holmes and Watson to a lengthy flashback. This narrative choice often left readers feeling that the story was drawn out, tedious, or disconnected from the initial mystery, with Holmes himself having a diminished role. A common disappointment centers on Professor Moriarty, whose prominent mention at the beginning leads to expectations of a larger role, only for his actual participation to be minimal, which some felt was misleading. Other criticisms include the mystery being somewhat predictable, Holmes' deductions feeling less clever than usual, and Watson's presence being less impactful. The novel is frequently ranked as the "least" favorite among the four Holmes novels, with some finding its pacing uneven and characters one-dimensional, and a few also noted a perceived lack of chemistry between Holmes and Watson compared to other stories or adaptations.

Overall, "The Valley of Fear" offers a unique Sherlock Holmes experience with its distinct narrative structure and a compelling, if divisive, backstory. It is highly recommended for devoted Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts who appreciate the author's intricate plotting and don't mind a significant portion of the story unfolding without the direct presence of the famous detective. Readers new to the series, or those seeking a more continuously Holmes-centric narrative, might prefer to start with other works like "The Hound of the Baskervilles." However, those who enjoy a blend of classic mystery with an expansive historical context and a surprising resolution will likely find this a rewarding read.
