In 1866, a mysterious sea monster is terrorizing the world's oceans, and French marine biologist Professor Aronnax joins an expedition to hunt it down. The hunt ends with Aronnax, his servant, and a master harpooner being thrown overboard, only to find refuge on the creature itself. They are startled to discover it is no living thing, but a futuristic submarine, the Nautilus, a marvel of engineering roaming the seas beyond the reach of any government. They are taken captive and brought into the world of its enigmatic commander, Captain Nemo.

Forced to remain on board permanently, the captives begin an extraordinary journey through the wonders of the deep, from the lost city of Atlantis to the Antarctic ice sheets. Yet, their host remains a profound mystery. A man of immense scientific knowledge and compassion for the oppressed, Nemo is also driven by a deep-seated hatred for civilization and a desire for vengeance. The captives must navigate the line between being guests on an unprecedented voyage of discovery and prisoners of a man whose brilliance is matched only by his torment.
