Ven y dime cómo vives

Readers widely commend Agatha Christie's memoir for its engaging, humorous, and charming portrayal of her experiences accompanying her archaeologist husband on digs in 1930s Syria and Iraq. Many reviewers found the book to be a delightful and witty read, offering a unique glimpse into Christie's personality, revealing her as adventurous, observant, and possessing a keen sense of humor. The narrative vividly depicts the daily life on these expeditions, including interactions with the diverse local populations, the domestic challenges, and the often rough conditions, all described with Christie's characteristic dry wit and enthusiasm for the land and its people. This personal account allows readers to see a different, more intimate side of the renowned author.

However, a notable number of reviewers point out significant drawbacks, primarily stemming from the book's reflection of attitudes prevalent during its time. Critics describe Christie's perspective as occasionally colonial, condescending, or even bigoted towards the local Arab, Kurdish, and Armenian communities. The memoir's frequent focus on household management and "the servant problem" is highlighted as a repetitive and often inaccessible theme for modern readers. Some also noted a lack of in-depth archaeological information or detailed insights into Christie's own writing process, making the book more of a collection of anecdotes rather than a scholarly or deeply reflective work.

Ultimately, "Come, Tell Me How You Live" offers a unique and personal travelogue that can be both captivating and problematic. While it provides an entertaining escape into a bygone era and showcases Christie's engaging narrative voice, readers should approach it with an awareness of its historical context and the dated social perspectives it contains. This memoir is highly recommended for Agatha Christie fans eager to explore her private life beyond her fiction, as well as those who enjoy lighthearted historical travelogues or memoirs focused on the human element of expeditions, provided they are prepared to engage with its complexities.
