The Reconstruction era brought new hardships. To save Tara from crippling taxes, Scarlett, with characteristic ruthlessness, manipulated Frank Kennedy, her younger sister Suellen's beau, into marrying her for his wealth. She transformed herself into a shrewd businesswoman, operating sawmills and defying societal norms, much to the chagrin of Atlanta society.
