Violet y Finch

Many readers found this book to be a deeply emotional and impactful experience, often leading to tears and a profound connection with the story and its characters. Reviewers frequently praised the authentic and natural writing style, noting that it avoids condescension towards its young adult audience. The narrative is lauded for its ability to tackle sensitive and important themes such as mental illness, depression, and suicidal ideation in a relatable and thought-provoking manner, fostering awareness and discussion around these crucial topics. Readers were drawn in by the realistic portrayal of teenage emotions, confusion, and the journey of characters finding growth and meaning in their lives. The book is described as beautiful, powerful, and life-affirming, capable of making ordinary moments feel significant and inspiring readers to appreciate life.

Conversely, a significant number of reviewers expressed strong criticism, highlighting several problematic aspects. Many found the portrayal of mental illness, particularly depression and bipolar disorder, to be irresponsible, inaccurate, and even harmful. Critics argued that the book romanticizes mental health struggles, presenting them as "quirks" rather than serious conditions, potentially sending a dangerous message to vulnerable young readers. Characters were often described as inauthentic, defined solely by their illnesses, and lacking genuine depth, with some relationships perceived as unhealthy or bordering on stalker-like. Furthermore, the book was accused of containing problematic elements such as "girl hate," slut shaming, racial insensitivity, and body shaming. Some reviewers felt the plot was predictable, derivative of other popular young adult novels, and that the adult characters were often unhelpful or negligent.

Ultimately, this book elicits a highly polarized response from readers. While many found it to be a deeply moving and thought-provoking experience that successfully sheds light on crucial mental health issues, others vehemently criticized its handling of these sensitive topics, deeming it irresponsible, inauthentic, and potentially harmful. The book is likely to appeal to readers who appreciate emotionally intense young adult narratives, particularly those drawn to stories of connection, growth, and the exploration of difficult themes, and who are less bothered by certain tropes or perceived inaccuracies in character portrayal. However, readers seeking nuanced, hopeful, and thoroughly realistic depictions of mental illness, or those sensitive to problematic social commentary and character dynamics, may find it frustrating or even offensive.
