Waverley (Everyman's Library)

Reviewers widely acknowledge Waverley, or 'tis Sixty Years Since as a foundational work in literature, often credited as the first true historical novel. Its pioneering approach moved beyond earlier romantic narratives by firmly rooting its story in a specific historical period, the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, and populating it with characters who reflect contemporary manners and participate in real events. Many found the book’s historical context fascinating and informative, appreciating Scott's meticulous research into Scottish politics, clan culture, and the distinct ways of life in the Highlands and Lowlands. The descriptions of the Scottish scenery are frequently praised as beautiful, immersive, and thrillingly romantic, transporting readers to the enchanting landscapes. While some female characters are noted as less developed, the cast, particularly many of the male figures, is often described as complex, unique, and memorable, driven by relatable human motivations. The protagonist, Edward Waverley, undergoes a significant journey of personal growth, evolving from an idle youth to a more understanding and responsible man. Despite its length, the underlying story is considered interesting, compelling, and full of adventure, exploring themes of valor, loyalty, and the clash of different societal values.

However, many reviewers found the book to be a challenging read, primarily due to its pacing and prose. A frequent complaint is the painfully slow start, with the first quarter or even third of the book described as wordy, meandering, and filled with extensive descriptions and introductions before the main plot gains momentum. Scott's writing style itself is often characterized as heavy, archaic, and occasionally infelicitous, made more difficult by the liberal inclusion of Scottish dialect, Gaelic, Latin, and French phrases, often without translation, which can disrupt the reading flow for modern audiences. The titular character, Edward Waverley, is sometimes seen as a passive, indecisive protagonist, making it difficult for some readers to fully connect with him. Furthermore, some reviewers noted that for a novel centered on a rebellion, Scott tends to skip over the most exciting historical battles and direct action, focusing instead on character studies and cultural details, which can make the historical events feel less dynamic. The author’s assumption of the reader’s prior knowledge of the Jacobite Rebellion’s intricate background and key figures also poses a hurdle for those unfamiliar with the history.

Ultimately, Waverley is regarded as a profoundly significant novel in the history of literature, particularly for its role in shaping the historical fiction genre. While its academic importance is undeniable, its intrinsic enjoyability for a contemporary audience is often debated. It is recommended for readers who appreciate classic literature and are prepared for a demanding reading experience. Those with a strong interest in British or Scottish history, the Jacobite Rebellion, or the evolution of the novel form will likely find it rewarding. Readers who enjoy detailed descriptions, a slower narrative pace, and complex character studies, and who are accustomed to 19th-century prose, are most likely to appreciate its charms. Conversely, those seeking a fast-paced plot, easy language, or immediate gratification may find it a struggle. Some suggest that reading it for a class or utilizing audio companions can enhance the experience, helping to navigate its linguistic and structural challenges.
