Wdowa

Many readers praised this debut novel as a well-written psychological suspense story that explores complex themes. Reviewers appreciated the use of multiple perspectives, including the titular widow, a detective, a reporter, and the husband, which some found made the story easy to follow despite shifts in time. The author's background in journalism contributed to an authentic portrayal of media pressures and tactics, which many found fascinating. The book was noted for its ability to build a simmering sense of dread and subtle tension, with some finding the slow unfolding of events engaging. Its exploration of power dynamics within relationships and the psychological aspects of a marriage under scrutiny were also highlighted as strengths.

However, a significant number of reviews expressed disappointment, primarily due to what they perceived as misleading marketing that promised a fast-paced thriller with major twists. Many found the book to be boring, lacking in mystery, and predictable, with the ending often confirming what was already suspected rather than delivering a surprise. The main character, the widow, was frequently described as passive, whiny, or uninteresting, making it difficult for some readers to connect with her. Critics also pointed out a lack of tension and emotional depth, particularly concerning the sensitive subject matter. The police investigation was sometimes deemed unrealistic or "stupid," and the constant comparisons to other popular thrillers like Gone Girl were a source of frustration, as many felt the book did not live up to such expectations.

Overall, opinions on the book are mixed. It is recommended for readers who appreciate a thoughtful character study and are interested in the psychological underpinnings of a marriage facing public accusation, rather than those seeking a conventional, twist-filled mystery. Readers who enjoy an authentic portrayal of journalism and police procedures in crime stories, and who are open to a slower, dread-building narrative, may find this book enjoyable. However, those expecting a fast-paced, unpredictable thriller with a manipulative protagonist or a shocking conclusion, as suggested by some marketing, may find it falls short of their expectations.
