What readers say
4.21
422 ratings across the webReviewers largely commend "When a Tree Shook Delhi" as an excellent, detailed, and factual account of a tragic period in Indian history and the subsequent protracted struggle for justice. Many found the book to be meticulously researched, with the first part, written by a journalist, praised for its gripping and engaging style that uncovers the horrors and complicity of the state, police, and judiciary. The dual authorship, featuring a journalist's investigative reporting and a lawyer's personal insights from his decades-long fight for victims, provides a unique and impactful perspective. The book is widely regarded as a crucial historical document, commended for bringing to light the truth behind a significant cover-up and evoking strong, necessary emotional responses in readers.
Despite its strengths, some readers found parts of the book, particularly the second section detailing the lengthy legal and bureaucratic battles, to be dense, taxing, or tiresome. A few reviewers noted that the writing style could sometimes lack a cohesive narrative, occasionally going back and forth, making it challenging to follow at points. While acknowledged as necessary given the subject, the book's portrayal of the systemic failures and the elusive nature of justice left many readers feeling enraged, saddened, and despondent. The second part, written from the perspective of a lawyer directly involved, was also described by some as having a decidedly partisan viewpoint.
Overall, "When a Tree Shook Delhi" is widely considered a mandatory and essential read for anyone seeking to understand a dark chapter in modern Indian history. It serves as a powerful exposé of how political, judicial, and law enforcement systems can fail citizens and enable widespread injustice. The book is highly recommended for journalists, legal professionals, and anyone interested in human rights, institutional accountability, and the complexities of India's democratic processes. Readers should be prepared for an emotionally challenging experience, as the book unflinchingly presents the brutal realities of the past and the enduring fight for truth and justice, serving as a stark warning and a call to remember.
