Wikinomics How Mass Collaboration Changes Everything

The book "Wikinomics" is widely praised for its groundbreaking insights into the emerging economy of mass collaboration, a concept it helped to popularize and define. Many readers found it to be an excellent and well-written exploration of how digital, networked technology enables new business models and innovative approaches to problem-solving. Reviewers frequently highlight the book's strength in providing numerous concrete examples and compelling case studies, such as the Goldcorp mining company and the development of open-source projects like Linux and Apache. It is lauded for explaining the benefits of cooperation, the power of reduced transaction costs through the internet, and for advocating entrepreneurial ideas. For many, it served as a significant "wake-up call," offering a valuable starting point for understanding the evolving digital future and the necessity for companies to embrace a paradigm shift towards more open, user-friendly, and peer-produced collaboration to thrive.

Despite its strengths, the book draws significant criticism for several perceived shortcomings. A common complaint is its repetitive and verbose nature, with many reviewers suggesting it could have been significantly shorter without losing its core message, often rehashing the same points using numerous anecdotes. Critics frequently point to an overly enthusiastic and uncritical tone, describing it as a "fanboy account" that exhibits unwavering optimism while tending to dismiss counterarguments or critics as "outdated." This enthusiasm is seen to lead to a lack of balanced perspective, as the book is accused of neglecting potential downsides such as the digital divide, the power imbalance between consumers and corporations, or the impact on traditional business and academic fields beyond IT. Furthermore, some readers found the book's predictions and examples to have become outdated quickly, with certain praised companies or projects later failing or encountering significant difficulties, and its understanding of competition, private property, and the complexities of outsourcing also came under scrutiny.

In conclusion, "Wikinomics" is generally considered a significant and thought-provoking work for its time, particularly for those new to the concepts of Web 2.0 and mass collaboration. While its enthusiastic tone and some outdated predictions may diminish its impact for contemporary readers or those already familiar with the subject, its core premise about the irreversible shift towards collaborative economic models remains relevant. The book serves as a valuable roadmap for understanding the fundamental changes in corporate strategy and R&D brought about by digital connectivity. It is particularly recommended for business leaders, managers, and individuals in traditional industries seeking to comprehend and implement new organizational approaches, as well as anyone interested in the foundational ideas of the collaboration economy, even if its execution is sometimes seen as less nuanced than desired.
