The story begins in the twilight of Imperial China, with the life of a young girl named Yu-fang, whose destiny is shaped by the brutal traditions of her era. From the tender age of two, her feet are bound, a torturous practice meant to achieve the coveted "three-inch golden lilies" that signify beauty and eligibility for marriage. This excruciating process leaves her with lifelong pain and disfigurement. At the age of fifteen, her ambitious father sells her as a concubine to a high-ranking warlord general, a man much older than herself. Despite the humiliation and confinement of her position, Yu-fang navigates this perilous world with remarkable resilience, eventually finding a measure of independence and love after the warlord's death, marrying a doctor and raising her daughter.

Her daughter, Bao Qin, the author's mother, is born into a China reeling from the fall of the Manchu Dynasty and facing Japanese occupation. Witnessing the abject poverty and suffering around her, Bao Qin becomes a fervent idealist, drawn to the promises of equality and liberation offered by the nascent Communist Party. She dedicates herself wholeheartedly to the revolution, rising through the ranks and meeting a fellow cadre, Wang Yu, who becomes her husband. Their love story unfolds amidst the harsh realities of civil war and political upheaval, often separated by party directives and enduring immense physical hardship, including a miscarriage suffered by Bao Qin during a grueling march. They are part of the Communist elite, believing in the dream of a new China.

As the Communist Party consolidates power, the initial optimism of Bao Qin and Wang Yu gradually gives way to disillusionment. Their unwavering loyalty is tested by the increasingly totalitarian nature of Mao's regime. Even as high-ranking officials, they are not immune to the capricious purges and political campaigns that sweep across the nation. The family experiences the chilling shift from revolutionary fervor to pervasive fear and suspicion.

The narrative then brings forth the third daughter, Jung Chang herself, born in 1952. Her childhood is steeped in the fervent ideology of Communist China, with Mao Zedong revered as a god-like figure. As a teenager, she eagerly joins the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution, a period of unprecedented social and political chaos. She, like many of her generation, is initially a zealous participant, caught up in the revolutionary zeal to denounce "counter-revolutionaries," a term that tragically comes to include her own parents.

The Cultural Revolution descends into madness, tearing families apart and destroying cultural heritage. Jung Chang witnesses her parents, once respected Party officials, being publicly denounced, humiliated, and sent to labor camps for "re-education". She endures grueling physical labor as a peasant, a "barefoot doctor," and later a steelworker and electrician, her education interrupted, her dreams deferred. The profound suffering and injustice she experiences, particularly the persecution of her beloved parents, shatter her youthful idealism and expose the brutal truth behind Mao's cult of personality.

Through these harrowing years, the family clings to their bonds, finding strength in their shared ordeal and quiet acts of defiance. The atmosphere is one of constant surveillance and fear, where a wrong word could lead to devastating consequences. The death of Mao Zedong in 1976 brings a glimmer of hope, and slowly, the rigid grip on society begins to loosen.

Finally, at the age of 26, Jung Chang receives a scholarship to study in Great Britain, a monumental escape from the confines of her homeland. Leaving behind a China forever etched into her soul, she carries the weight of her family's history and the scars of a turbulent century. Her journey represents a poignant departure, not just from a country, but from a legacy of struggle, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of freedom in the face of overwhelming political forces.
