Will (Random House Large Print)

Many reviewers highly praise the audiobook version of "Will," often recommending it as the superior format due to Will Smith's engaging self-narration. Listeners enjoyed the inclusion of music and other audio clips, which added a unique layer of entertainment and emotional impact to his storytelling. The memoir is lauded by some as inspiring and life-changing, offering valuable lessons on work ethic, ambition, and personal growth. Readers found the accounts of his childhood in Philadelphia, his early successes in the hip-hop scene, and the origins of "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" particularly fascinating. Some appreciate what they perceived as his honesty and vulnerability in sharing aspects of his life journey and family dynamics.

Despite the praise, a significant number of reviewers found the book to be overly self-aggrandizing and boastful, with frequent mentions of his fame, success, and wealth. Many felt that Smith's ego often overshadowed the narrative, making it difficult to connect with him on a deeper level, and some admitted to liking him less after reading the autobiography. Criticisms include a perceived lack of genuine self-awareness, with some describing his vulnerability as performative rather than truly introspective. Concerns were also raised about his handling of past relationship challenges, a perceived lack of accountability for certain actions, and a tendency to gloss over sensitive topics. The book's considerable length was a point of contention for some, who found parts of it rambling, repetitive, or filled with superfluous information, especially in later sections.

Ultimately, "Will" appears to be a polarizing read, with strong opinions on both sides. While it provides a comprehensive look at Will Smith's life and career, readers' enjoyment often hinges on their existing perception of him and their tolerance for his narrative style. The book is highly recommended for dedicated Will Smith fans, those interested in the evolution of hip-hop and the entertainment industry, and listeners who value an author-narrated audiobook experience with high production quality. However, readers seeking a deeply critical self-examination, unbiased accounts of celebrity life, or extensive behind-the-scenes details of movie productions may find it less satisfying.
