Witches Abroad (Discworld)

Reviewers frequently praise this installment for its uproarious humor and the delightful interactions between the three central witch characters: Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick. Their dynamic, particularly the banter and camaraderie between Granny and Nanny, is highlighted as a major source of enjoyment. The novel is lauded for its clever and extensive parody of fairy tales, folklore, and mythological tropes, drawing from various sources to create a rich comedic landscape. Beyond the laughter, many readers appreciate how the author uses this comic setting to explore deeper themes, offering insightful satire on human nature, the power of stories, and the complexities of wishes and their fulfillment. The writing is described as brilliant, sharp, and wonderfully crafted, balancing wit, puns, and poignant observations. The vivid depiction of the foreign setting and its cultural clashes also adds to the fun, making it a memorable and entertaining adventure.

Despite widespread acclaim, some reviewers noted areas for improvement. A recurring critique concerns the plot's pacing, particularly in the latter half, which some found choppy or less naturally flowing. Elements introduced later in the story were sometimes perceived as inadequately developed, and the central theme of stories felt underdeveloped to a few readers. Another point of contention was the consistent teasing and perceived bullying of Magrat by the elder witches and the narrator, which some found off-putting or made them view the other characters negatively. A significant concern raised by one reviewer was the uncomfortable description of Nanny Ogg's cat, Greebo, for comedic effect, specifically regarding animal interactions. Lastly, some felt that while good, it wasn't the absolute strongest entry in the overall Discworld series or even the Witches sub-series.

Overall, the book is widely considered a highly enjoyable and brilliant entry, with many reviewers calling it one of their favorite Witches novels, or even one of the best in the entire Discworld series. It is recommended for readers who appreciate intelligent humor, sharp satire, and a unique take on classic fairy tales. Fans of the Witches sub-series will particularly enjoy the continued adventures and character development of Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat. It offers a blend of laugh-out-loud moments and thoughtful reflections on human nature and narrative power. While some minor pacing issues and character dynamics were noted, the book generally delivers a wonderfully crafted and entertaining experience for those seeking a humorous fantasy with underlying depth.
