To voice a desire to go outside, to speak of the surface with hope or curiosity, is the gravest taboo, punishable by "cleaning."

The narrative begins with Holston, the silo's sheriff, a man who has always upheld the rules. Yet, a gnawing grief for his wife, Allison, who was sent out for cleaning three years prior, pushes him to an unthinkable act. Allison, driven by her own discoveries from recovered deleted files, had grown convinced the outside view was a lie, that the screens projected a false reality. She had believed she would be safe. Her ascent from the lower depths to the position of sheriff immediately creates friction with the silo's established hierarchy, particularly with Bernard, the enigmatic head of IT, who wields considerable power.
